abstract |

The aim of the article is to provide heuristic categories for the description of contemporary conflicts over collective memory in order to specify their development and the framing conditions of their civil and cooperative settling. I distinguish between two ideal types of memory conflicts: on the one hand, conflicts of interest, in which collective memories serve as vehicles for the demonstration and promotion of particular interests, and, on the other hand, cultural conflicts, in which opposing positions quarrel over the définition of an imagined community. With the help of this heuristic construction it can be demonstrated that civil and cooperative conflict settlement is not possible unless the parties involved in the conflict refrain from treating it as a manifestation of one and only one of the ideal types. Memory conflicts may escalate if either side tries to do so. In such cases of de-differentiated conflicts the basic mechanisms of civil settlement of conflicts of interest as well as of cultural conflicts are delegitimated. The main thesis is illustrated by an analysis of the contemporary debate over Stalinism in Russia.
|
