The works of G. Balandier span seventy years and can be separated into half a dozen domains which overlap each other (autobiographical preoccupations, African fieldworks, colonial and development situations, the politics, modernity and globalisation, a detour by way of epistemology). The paper reviews all his major publications according to both the disciplinary specificity and ambivalence maintained between anthropology and sociology. After his retirement in 1985, G. Balandier de-africanized his inspiration and referred more and more to second-hand sources. Writing very little about the practical and intellectual makings of his own works and did not actively participate in the social science debates of this last quarter of a century. His intellectual reputation both in France and in French-speaking Africa is still highly visible but increasingly more and more symbolic.
