This review presents the English translation of the collective book written by the first black General Secretary of the South African Communist Party, A. T. Nzula, and the two first Soviet Africanist scholars, I. Potekhin and A. Zusmanovich, published in Russian in 1933. We describe the South African professional and activist life of A. T. Nzula who went to Russia in 1931 and died in Moscow in 1934. Then we analyze and comment the contents of the book, entitled Forced Labour in Colonial Africa. This book is the first Communist and Marxist endeavour to analyze African social and political movements including nationalist, reformist and revolutionary parties especially in South Africa.
